Marathon is less about a single attraction and more about a lifestyle. Positioned midway through the Keys, it offers the perfect balance of access to both the upper and lower islands while maintaining its own distinct, unhurried character.
Seven Mile Bridge
One of the most iconic bridges in the world, stretching 6.79 miles (10.9 kilometers) from Marathon to Little Duck Key. Walk, bike, or drive across for sweeping ocean views. The old bridge section (built for Henry Flagler’s railroad) remains open for pedestrians and anglers.
Crane Point Museum & Nature Center
A 63-acre protected tropical hardwood hammock, one of the last of its kind in the Florida Keys. Features walking trails, a historic pioneer home, a natural history museum, and a wild bird rehabilitation center. A quiet, educational escape from the water.
The Turtle Hospital
The world’s only state-licensed veterinary hospital dedicated to sea turtle rehabilitation. Located on Grassy Key, just north of Marathon. Offers educational tours where visitors learn about rescue, rehabilitation, and release. A favorite for families.
Sombrero Reef & Lighthouse
Located approximately 3.5 miles offshore from Marathon, this protected reef is one of the most vibrant dive and snorkel sites in the Florida Keys. The 142-foot iron lighthouse was built in 1858 and remains an iconic landmark. Visibility often exceeds 60 feet.
Dolphin Research Center (Grassy Key)
A world-renowned nonprofit center for dolphin and sea lion research, education, and conservation. Visitors can interact with dolphins, learn about marine mammal behavior, and observe research sessions. Located just north of Marathon.
Pigeon Key
A small island nestled beneath the old Seven Mile Bridge, accessible by ferry or tour. Once a work camp for railroad construction crews building Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. Today, it houses a museum, historic buildings, and excellent snorkeling.
Canal-Front Living
Marathon is known for its residential canals, where boats are parked in backyards rather than marinas. Rentals with private docks are common, making it ideal for travelers who want to bring their own boat or rent one for the week.
Waterways in Every Direction
With access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Marathon offers world-class boating, fishing, and snorkeling just minutes from shore.
Fishing
Marathon is a serious fishing destination without the crowds of Islamorada or Key West. Offshore charters target sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, and wahoo. Backcountry trips in Florida Bay target tarpon, bonefish, and permit. Reef fishing for snapper and grouper is excellent year-round.
Diving & Snorkeling
Sombrero Reef is the crown jewel, but Marathon also offers access to Delta Shoal, Coffin Patch Reef, and numerous shipwrecks. Dive operators offer two-tank morning dives, afternoon snorkel trips, and night dives.
Boating
Numerous marinas offer rentals, from center consoles to pontoon boats. The calm waters of Florida Bay are ideal for family cruising, while the Atlantic side offers more challenging conditions for experienced boaters.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding
The mangrove shorelines of Boot Key, Vaca Key, and Grassy Key offer protected paddling routes. Rentals and guided tours available.
Island Stays, Marinas & Coastal Living
Marathon welcomes longer stays with canal-front homes, low-rise resorts, and marina-connected properties. Local dining leans toward casual waterfront spots where fresh catch and sunset views set the pace.
Resorts & Hotels
Tranquility Bay Resort (beachfront, spacious cottages), Isla Bella Beach Resort (luxury, five pools, waterfront dining), Hawks Cay Resort (located on Duck Key, just east of Marathon, full-service marina), and Courtyard by Marriott (reliable, waterfront, convenient).
Canal-Front Rentals
Marathon is known for its residential rental market. Countless homes along the canals offer private docks, direct water access, and space for families or groups. Ideal for longer stays.
Marinas
Marathon Marina (full-service, fuel, slips, boat rentals), Boot Key Harbor (one of the largest recreational boat harbors in the Keys, popular with liveaboards), and Faro Blanco Marina (historic lighthouse, full-service facilities).
Dining
Local favorites include Lazy Days South (oceanside, fresh seafood), The Island Fish Company (casual, sunset views), Keys Fisheries (working fish house, famous for lobster reuben), and Brutus Seafood Market (takeout, local catch, no frills).
