Eleuthera is long, narrow, and best explored at a relaxed pace. A bit of planning ensures you make the most of its spread-out beauty.
The Glass Window Bridge Is the Island’s Seam
The narrowest point of Eleuthera, where the Atlantic crashes on one side and calm Exuma Sound rests on the other, is also the dividing line between north and south. Roads north of the bridge differ from roads south of the bridge. Know which side your accommodation is on before you book flights.
Three Airports, Three Regions
North Eleuthera (ELH) serves Harbour Island, Spanish Wells, and the northern beaches. Governor’s Harbour (GHB) serves the central settlements and French Leave Beach. Rock Sound (RSD) serves the southern resorts and Cape Eleuthera. Choose the airport closest to your lodging. Driving across the island eats hours.
Harbour Island Requires a Water Taxi
You cannot drive to Harbour Island. Fly into North Eleuthera (ELH), take a taxi to the dock (10 minutes), then board a water taxi to Harbour Island (10 minutes). Factor this into your arrival and departure plans. The pink sand beach is worth the extra step.
The Atlantic Side vs. the Exuma Sound Side
The east coast faces the open Atlantic, waves, wind, dramatic views, less swimmable. The west coast faces the calm Exuma Sound, flat water, gentle entry, ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Most beaches on the Sound side are swimmable year-round.
Rental Cars Are Essential but Limited
Eleuthera has no public transportation. Rental cars are available at all three airports but supply is tight, especially from December through April. Book your car weeks before arrival. Do not assume you can find one same-day.
The Queen’s Baths Are Tide-Dependent
These natural tidal pools on the Atlantic side are spectacular at low tide when you can soak in calm water. At high tide or rough seas, waves crash over the rocks and the pools become unsafe. Check tide charts and weather before driving out.
Cell Service Is Good in Settlements
Governor’s Harbour, Rock Sound, and settlements near the airports have reliable service. Remote stretches, especially along the Atlantic coast between towns, have little to no signal. Download offline maps before driving.
Temperatures by Season
– December to April: 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). Dry season. Best for beach days and exploration.
– May to June: 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). Warmer. Excellent swimming conditions. Fewer visitors.
– July to October: 80°F to 88°F (27°C to 31°C). Hurricane season. Afternoon showers common.
What to Pack Specifically for Eleuthera
Water shoes (rocky edges at Queen’s Baths and Glass Window), polarized sunglasses (essential for spotting reefs and navigating the Sound), a rash guard for extended snorkeling, insect repellent for dawn and dusk, and a dry bag for boat trips to Harbour Island.
The Preacher’s Cave Is Unmarked
The historic cave where shipwrecked settlers worshipped in 1648 has no ticket booth, no gift shop, no paved parking. It is a dirt pull-off on the north end. Look for the small sign. Bring a flashlight to explore the interior.
Sapphire Blue Hole Has a Jumping Platform
Near the Glass Window Bridge, this collapsed limestone cave connects to the sea through underground tunnels. A diving platform sits about 25 feet above the water. Only jump if you are a confident swimmer and have checked depth with locals first.
Sunday Hours Are Limited
Many grocery stores close or operate reduced hours. Some restaurants close entirely. Restaurants that do open may have limited menus or higher walk-in demand. Plan your grocery shopping for Saturday. Book Sunday dinners in advance.
Tippy’s Is the Reliable Beach Bar
Just north of Governor’s Harbour, Tippy’s serves food and drinks directly on the sand. It is open for lunch and dinner daily. When other places are closed or full, Tippy’s is usually available. Their rum punch is famous for a reason.
The Ocean Hole in Rock Sound
This legendary blue hole sits in the middle of town. You can park, walk up, and look into deep blue water surrounded by limestone. Locals have stories. Kids jump in. It is free, accessible, and takes 15 minutes.
How Long to Stay
A minimum of 5 days allows you to explore one region, north or south, comfortably. A week lets you drive the full 110 miles with stops. Trying to see both Harbour Island and Cape Eleuthera in 3 days results in more driving than relaxing.
