Crooked Island moves at a slow, unhurried pace, where planning ahead makes all the difference. It’s a place best enjoyed with patience and a willingness to disconnect.
The Island Is 80 Miles Long but Very Thin
Crooked Island stretches from northwest to southeast with a narrow landmass rarely more than a few miles wide. Driving from Pitts Town in the north to the southern tip takes well over an hour. Roads are paved in sections but deteriorate quickly after rain.
Two Airports, Two Endpoints
Fly into Colonel Hill (CRI) for the main settlement, government services, and central access. Fly into Pitts Town (PWN) for direct access to Crooked Island Lodge and the northern coastline. The two airports are nearly an hour apart by car. Choose based on your lodging.
The Bight of Acklins Is Right There
Crooked Island shares the massive shallow lagoon with neighboring Acklins. The Bight’s knee-deep waters stretch for miles, creating exceptional bonefishing opportunities. You can wade from shore on the western side without a boat.
No Rental Cars at the Airport
Unlike more developed islands, you cannot walk off the plane and into a rental car. Cars must be arranged through your lodge or guesthouse in advance. Without prior coordination, you will have no transportation.
Cell Service Exists Only in Colonel Hill
Reliable signal is limited to the capital and immediate surroundings. Once you drive north toward Pitts Town or south toward the remote flats, expect nothing. Download offline maps and any needed documents before arrival.
The Bird Rock Lighthouse Requires a Boat
The historic 1870s lighthouse on Bird Rock sits on a small cay off the northern tip. You cannot walk to it. You need a boat. Lodges can arrange trips, but this is not a spontaneous walk-up attraction.
Temperatures by Season
– December to April: 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). Dry season. Prime bonefishing conditions. Best weather window.
– May to June: 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). Warmer. Fewer visitors. Excellent flats fishing.
– July to October: 80°F to 88°F (27°C to 31°C). Hurricane season. Many days still sunny but risk is real.
What to Pack Specifically for Crooked Island
Polarized sunglasses (essential for spotting bonefish on the shallow flats), reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent (non-negotiable near mangroves and at dawn/dusk), a portable power bank, a dry bag for boat trips, and a flashlight. Grocery options are extremely limited.
Dining Is Lodge-Centered
Crooked Island Lodge provides meals for its guests. Colonel Hill has a few small local eateries but hours are unpredictable and menus change based on what is available. Do not arrive expecting multiple restaurant options or late-night dining.
The Flats Are Wadeable from Shore
Unlike many Bahamian fishing destinations that require expensive guide boats, Crooked Island’s western flats are accessible by foot from multiple points. Experienced DIY anglers can fish without a guide. Ask locally for safe entry points and tide information.
Sundays Are Completely Quiet
Businesses close. Ferry services do not run. Even some lodge operations scale back. Plan your arrival and supply runs for Saturday. Sunday is for church, family, and rest.
The Population Is Under 500 Crooked Island has fewer than 500 residents. Neighboring Long Cay adds only a handful more. This means no crowds, no nightlife, no organized tours beyond fishing. It also means limited services and no emergency room.
Medical Facilities Are Basic
The nearest hospital is in Nassau. Serious medical issues require evacuation. Pack all prescription medications for your stay. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Castle Island Is a Boat Trip Away
A short boat ride reaches Castle Island, where you can see the ruins of a historic lighthouse and enjoy panoramic Atlantic views. The surrounding waters offer excellent snorkeling. Lodges can arrange this as a half-day excursion.
Flamingos Nest Here
Crooked Island is one of the few places in the Bahamas where you can see flamingos in the wild. Thousands inhabit this part of the archipelago. Best viewing is early morning or late afternoon near the western shore.
How Long to Stay
A minimum of 5 days is recommended given travel time from the U.S. Fishing packages typically run 6-7 days. The island is too remote for a short weekend trip. Shorter stays feel rushed and unsatisfying.
