San Salvador is quiet, historic, and refreshingly unhurried. A little preparation helps you fully enjoy its simplicity and charm.
The Island Has Two Distinct Coasts
The East Coast faces the open Atlantic, dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and windy conditions. The west coast faces the calm Bahama Bank, shallow flats, gentle water, ideal for swimming and bonefishing. Most beaches worth visiting are on the western side.
Dean’s Blue Hole Swims from the Beach
Unlike many blue holes surrounded by rock, Dean’s plunges over 660 feet but opens directly onto a sandy beach. You can wade in from shore. Snorkelers can see the dramatic drop-off. Free divers train here for world records. No boat required.
Two Airports, One Long Drive
Fly into Stella Maris (SML) for the northern beaches, Columbus Monument, and Cape Santa Maria. Fly into Deadman’s Cay (LGI) for Dean’s Blue Hole, Hamilton’s Cave, and Clarence Town. The two airports are nearly an hour apart. Choose based on your lodging.
Cape Santa Maria Beach Is Worth the Drive
Located at the northern tip, this four-mile stretch of powdery white sand consistently ranks among the world’s best beaches. Calm, turquoise water. No crowds. Even if you are staying in the south, make time for this beach.
Hamilton’s Cave Is a Real Underground Experience
Located near Deadman’s Cay, this is one of the largest caves in the Bahamas. Guided tours last 30-45 minutes. Bring sturdy shoes. The cave floor can be uneven and slippery. Ancient Lucayan drawings remain visible on the walls.
Rental Cars Are Limited but Essential
Long Island has no public transportation. Rental cars are available at both airports, but supply is extremely limited, especially from December through April. Book your car weeks before arrival. Do not assume you can find one upon landing.
Cell Service Drops Away from Town
Reliable service exists in Stella Maris, Clarence Town, and Deadman’s Cay. Once you head to Cape Santa Maria, Dean’s Blue Hole, or remote beaches, expect no signal. Download offline maps before driving.
Temperatures by Season
- December to April: 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C). Dry season. Best for beach days and cave exploration.
- May to June: 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C). Warmer. Excellent visibility for blue hole swimming.
- July to October: 80°F to 88°F (27°C to 31°C). Hurricane season. Greenwood Beach winds are strongest.
What to Pack Specifically for Long Island
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes for Hamilton’s Cave (the floor is uneven), polarized sunglasses for spotting bonefish, reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard for extended swimming, insect repellent for dawn and dusk, and a waterproof camera for the blue hole.
The Columbus Monument Is Quick but Scenic
Near Stella Maris, the monument marks Christopher Columbus’s 1492 landing. It is a 10-minute stop with nice coastline views. Combine it with a visit to nearby beaches rather than driving specifically for it.
Greenwood Beach Is for Kiteboarding
The Atlantic side’s eight-mile stretch of pink sand has consistent wind, making it a top kitesurfing spot in the Bahamas. Prime conditions run from late fall through winter. Not ideal for casual swimming.
Fernandez Bay Is the Calm Alternative
On the western side near New Bight, Fernandez Bay offers calm, protected waters perfect for families, swimmers, and paddleboarders. Fernandez Bay Village sits directly on the sand.
Gas Stations Are Few
Fuel is available in Stella Maris, Clarence Town, and Deadman’s Cay. Do not assume you can find gas near Cape Santa Maria or the southern coast. Fill up whenever you pass a station.
Sundays Are Quiet
Grocery stores close or operate reduced hours. Many restaurants close entirely. Plan supply runs for Saturday. Lodge restaurants typically continue serving guests but may have limited menus.
Bonefishing Flats Are Wadeable
Unlike many Bahamian fishing destinations, Long Island has accessible flats near Deadman’s Cay and along the southern coastline. Experienced DIY anglers can wade from shore without hiring a guide. Ask locally for current access points.
The Stella Maris Resort Has Its Own Air Service
The resort operates private charter flights from Nassau and other Bahamian islands. Guests and non-guests can book. Useful if you are arriving by commercial flight and need a connection to the northern end.
Clarence Town’s Twin Churches Are Photogenic
Two identical churches, one Anglican, one Catholic, sit on a hill overlooking the harbor. Built by the same architect in the 19th century. A quick stop for photos, not a half-day activity.
How Long to Stay
A minimum of 4-5 days allows you to explore one region, north or south, comfortably. A week lets you experience both ends of the island at a relaxed pace. Trying to cover the entire 80 miles in 3 days results in more driving than beach time.
